about babilon...

1999… The year I witnessed myself walking the Path of Hip Hop Culture. Through the ear and out in the form of appearance, I had evolved into a Symbol of Hip Hop. Raised in an environment known for holding South Africa’s most rugged natives. Consistently on an escapade. Where drinks; drugs; thugs and daggers would, at the end of its track, with out fail, Clash! Where Hpz was raised. Umtata aka Mthatha!

Certain regions at certain hours where forbidden. Where x-convicts and mates chose turfs well hidden. This was where the unemployed prowled. Where they exchanged motivation speech, techniques and methods of hustling. Spoken in a lingo known as ‘inombolo’ (aka to us as digits), major plots for quick cash were drafted. Keeping the gathering of the minority going: they sold Marijuana and Mandrax. Worked like a magnet to metal … This is the environment where the artist of life had sketched an image of me.

If you were a normal pedestrian, moving around with a glare and your nose up like you searched for only the purest of air, getting around with out being a target would be tough! To be honest, I was once a target and victim. Even thought my ways of living were like: frequently socializing with substance merchants, weapon carriers that smuggled through streets infested with sneaky pigs, and holding up walls in the CBD with school mates that walked bloody paths, enjoying throat-soothing drags. A third eye in the streets was necessary . In general the turf is hazardous.

Also evading close calls from blade swinging moments with a Master of Ceremonies who has from Day1 been my companion in numerous movements …Iznut – Has bailed us out with his ability to speak in digits. [Making two big boy bow ….’word for that son.’] ‘Who did they think were approaching us with that tone and posture… fockin bitches!’

Never the less, that had changed. I became aware of the system they operated by, the body language, as well as getting myself known to those who kept the streets clear from any movement after 18:hundred & hustlers from different areas. From victims to respected ..Now we walk aplomb through any Darkness

This all sums up to the way the environment has shaped us as emcees. Looking at Hip Hop and the industry differently. To live with a mentality self created and controlled. To break barriers and skulls …To spoil commercialism.

“Now my mentality’s like thick sinuous roots, emerging from tree trunks, descending beneath jungle soil… I’m not reaching out for the shine… I’m reaching out to strengthen a culture with a sack of self-crafted tools, preparing 4 a journey that will last to my last breath…”

The mass Hpz started off as a duo. Consisting of two emcees: Iznut and Babilon- the founders of its all. Recruiting as the path is walked. On the green tip of Africa, Eastern Cape, is where the name ‘Hpz’ romes.

Hpz stands for HopHeadz. The name came about when free styles, written scripts and Hip Hop in general was being listened too. Headz would automatically hop, When this happend..you know it was tru. This wasn’t your..what they call ‘ordinary head bob’..fuck that!!. This was only seen with genuine Hip Hop and nothing less. Hens the name HopHeadz stuck with our presents.
