Ghetto Bus Tour Showcases Chicago's Housing Projects

- news link from v_y, 11 months ago

A yellow bus with a tour guide and passagers who paid $20 for the tour, travels through some of Chicago's projects, once one of the most dangerous places in the U.S.

The yellow school bus rumbles through vacant lots and past demolished buildings, full of people who have paid $20 for a tour of what was once among the most dangerous areas of this or any other city in the United States.

For the tour guides, the "Ghetto Bus Tour" is not just another way to get money from tourists. It's a way of communicating a different story of Chicago's notorious housing projects, "something other than well-known tales about gang violence so fierce that residents slept in their bathtubs to avoid bullets."

They do these in Rio de Janeiro too – http://www.favelatour.com.br. It seems like an odd idea, but this might be the closest some middle class people ever get to seeing how a lot of people really live.

WHY PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT YOU COULD BASICALLY SEE ON THE CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (CTA). JUST ANOTHER PERSON TRYING TO MAKE A BUCK . COOL WITH ME I SUPPOSE . HOW ABOUT A TRAILER PARK ?????? LETS SEE HOW THE SPRINGER ACTORS ARE LIVING ????????? $15.00/PERSON ON A SHORT BUS .

I wonder if the tour guides are armed and give the tourist bulletproof vest, I have lived in Chicago for over 20 years and I still dont visit the projects.
