“You Bought My Tape With A Check?”
One of the questions from Steven’s great interview with Cool & Dre was “Juve, B.G. or Weezy.” To me it’s not a question; the answer is Juve, and for one reason, “400 Degreez.”
Context matters with regards to this piece, looking back it’s one of the most important albums in rap’s history, for better or worse. It was the first time a Southern album reached mainstream radio all the way up in Boston, which at the time was the last refuge of the East Coast. The only other Southern artist that had broken through at the time was Outkast, (this didn’t even happen until their third album,) and while they certainly represent the ATL, they have a unique sound that not many other rappers style and copy. Juvenile, meanwhile was straight dirty, laying the blueprint for the Lil Scrappy’s of the world.
