Ambivalent Anger: “N” Word Resolutions and The Hip Hop World
It was a few days after the resolution to ban the “N” word was passed here in New York City. I hadn’t yet been able to figure out exactly how I felt about all of the energy surrounding the situation. I turned on the TV to catch “Like It Is”, a program that’s been part of my Sunday morning routine since I was a young cat. And divine intervention decided to stick it’s head into my life once again. They decided to run an old episode that featured Malcolm X. This was the fiery but cool Malcolm, able to rip naysayers to shreds with a few sentences and even, firm stares. He was asked for his opinion on the calls for civil rights legislation. Brother
Malcolm replied true to form, saying “There are enough laws on the books. If you considered us citizens to begin with, there would be no need for additional legislation.” Right then, he summed up exactly everything that I felt about the “N” word resolution.
