Southern rap is not really rap. Just listen to their lyrics. It’s mostly just about the music, like techno or pop music, it falls under that category. The lyrics are poor, and I do not seem to understand that ridiculous dance with fingers snapping? What is that about? I can tell you this. Take any little rapper (what I call southern rappers because most of them have the word little in front of their names, and that’s all they will always be) and have him freestyle against someone like Cannibus, Papoose, or someone from Wu Tang, and you will see that they are wack. Seriously, it’s a disgrace. I remember someone online who told me about a rapper named little john or something like that. He gave me the link. I listened to it. Most of the time he just screamed, “WHAAAAAAAAAAAT!” Wow, very impressive. These guys are so lazy when it comes to rapping. They choose easy words to rhyme with, cat, hat, dog, etc…, and people are stupid enough to call it hip hop. It’s just a fad. It will die soon, very soon. Then the West & East coast will dominate hip hop again.

If all they rap about is spending money, then how can it be considered an art form? Bring back NY rap or West Coast dominance! Anything but the garbage on the radio now, please.

just like in any genre, you have the guys who are producing cookie cutter tracks with no heart that degrade the image of the entire genre. however there are also those that excel and help with the evolution as well. for someone to say that the genre as a whole is terrible and inferior to other subgenres of hiphop/rap is just completely ignorant. the thing about rap is that it really is ALL about the lyrics. and sometimes tracks that are written amazingly are looked at as terrible because the listener does not undetstand the content. Culture and slang are different from each neighborhood to neghboorhood nevermind state to state. concepts and terminology we have never encountered before may slip by our ears unnoticed and therefore we do not appreciate what is being said.

You know what? I hate the state of the south and the effect it has had on hip hop. but I have to admit underground fans don’t support their artists as much as they should. The artists have to eat and we pay the money to ensure that they do. If you hate southern hip hop, get your sideline asses into the game and support quality music. I think we all need to stop frontin’ ... Southern music crippled hip hop tremendously. Just as black people were getting their respect from the white community and other demographics as well, the inception of lil john, boosie, scrappy, and whoever else arrived.

I’m not saying that Southerners don’t have some fly rappers. Hell, T.I and OutKast are good. But that’s because they do more than just rap…they’re businessmen. Modern Southern rappers (the ones that come out and make one song and they’re finished) aren’t businessmen. It’s like they pride themselves on their limits and restrictions (T Pain gave an interview where he advocates his eighth-grade education). Jay Z, Eminem, Nas…these men own companies, teams, and labels. And yes, many of the Northern rappers didn’t graduate high school or go to high-performing educational institutions…but they dont let that stop them. Now, they get respect from people who would laugh in the face of the Shop Boyz. . . you know…the blue suit, briefcase-carrying white men.

A truly great rapper is one that gets respect from ALL . Even though his lyrics aren’t that hot… 50 Cent can go to some remote country in Africa and people will shout his name. Lil Scrappy’s respect only reaches to the waffle house down the street. Kanye West can put out a CD thats Number One on ALL charts for multiple weeks. Soulja Boy will have the Number One Lime Wire download.

And for whoever said that those Southern rappers have money…you’re sadly mistaken. Most that stuff is rented and fake.

It’s almost sad that the modern Southern rappers and those who defend them are trying to corrupt an industry that was and still is (in some respect) looked down upon. Words of wisdom to those who TRULY respect hip hop music . . .the Southern domination is a sad fad that will soon die out. Keep hope, keep faith, and keep supporting those who REALLY make music.
